• Pronouncing words incorrectly can make you sound uneducated and less intelligent than you really are.
• Here is my list of the Top Nine- excerpted from my book Speak To Influence: How To Unlock The Hidden Power Of Your Voice available at your favorite bookseller
Get the "l" in there!
Do you say "awready" and "awright" instead of "aLready" and "aLLright"??
"D" and "T" are not interchangeable
Do you say "qualiDY" instead of "qualiTy"? Or "diTn't" for "diDn't"?
The murderous switcheroo Substituting AXE for ASK. Think about it: "I will AXE him if he wants to come." With an invitation like that, he will probably decline.
The "R" versus "OUR syndrome "OUR" (as in "our house") is pronounced the same as "hour"- not like the letter "r". Probable cause
Do you shorten "PROBABLY" to "PROBLY" or "PROLLY?" Listen to yourself carefully. "l" and "E" confusion Many Americans make "E" and "I" interchangeable when they speak. For instance, "Do you have a pIn or a pIncil I can write with?" It's about them!
Do you say "thUm" instead of "thEm"? You're not alone, but try to avoid it.
"Fur" Free! Do you substitute "FUR" for "FOR"? When calling someone to the phone, do you say "It's FUR you?" Keep the FUR on the animals, where it belongs!
Getting the JIST of it The word is "jUst" not "jIst." Try to remember "justice."
• When you have to give a talk, don't merely hope and pray that you get through it as quickly as possible.Look for any opportunity to improve someone's life through the information and unique perspective you bring.
• Most of us don’t tell stories to become an entertainer or to make it on television. We tell stories as a way to instruct, explain and, in the end, sell our ideas to others. As a leader we must sell ideas. As a co-worker we must sell ideas. As a spouse, parent and friend we want and need to sell ideas.
Stories are a great way to sell ideas, but not all stories are successful in doing that. Of all the factors that will impact a story’s effectiveness in getting a message across, perhaps the most important is brevity.
• I’m sure you have heard of the KISS Principle. It is usually defined as: Keep it Simple Stupid. But being a positive guy, I prefer to define it differently: Keep it Splendidly Simple. When you apply the KISS principle to your stories you will tell much better stories, with much greater results.
Here are five tips to help you craft your stories more simply, which ultimately helps them have greater impact:
• Start with the message • Tell it on paper or in your head • Think parable or fairy tale • Cut to the chase! • KISS and tell!
